This round was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Von Roentgen. It was commissioned by the Swiss pharmaceutical firm Nycomed. The mint which produced the round is unknown but could be one of the German mints such as Geiger. The round has a proof-like finish.
Obverse: The central image on the obverse is a left-facing image of Wilhelm Von Roentgen. His name is inscribed above the image while the inscription below reads "DISCOVERER OF X-RAY". The dates "1845" and "1923" are inscribed on either side of the image. A lightning bolt decorates the field above the date on the left.
Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is a primitive image of an X-ray machine. It includes among other things, an X-ray emitting lamp, a light, film, and an image of a hand. The upper outer inscription reads "ROENTGEN RAYS". The weight, purity, and content of "ONE OZ. .999 FINE SILVER" can be found inscribed at the bottom. A smaller inscription at the top reads "AN IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE" while another one at the bottom reads "DISCOVERED NOVEMBER 1895".
