Cayman Islands Marlin

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory that enjoys self-governing status. The island nation consists of three major islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. There is a total of just 102 square miles of land between the three islands. The Cayman Islands uses its own fiat currency, the Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD) and the country is known around the world as a hub of offshore financial activity.

In 2017, the Cayman Islands entered into an agreement with Scottsdale Mint to produce a bullion series of coins featuring the marlin, a sporting fish often found near the islands. Per the agreement, the mint will produce coins in fine (.999) silver and fine (.9999) gold – all of which will feature the marlin. The Cayman Islands Marlin silver coin is produced with a mintage of only 50,000 pieces and is delivered in “Proof-like” quality with a purity of .999 FS.

Design

Obverse: The obverse designs on the Cayman Islands Marlin Silver Coins include the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in right-profile relief in a design from Ian Rank-Broadley. This bust of the Queen was created in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England as its fourth-generation design. The background field features calm ocean waters. The outer rim of the design field includes waving sea lines. Inscriptions along the outer rim are "ELIZABETH II • CAYMAN ISLANDS • 1 DOLLAR" as well as the year.

Reverse: The reverse design features the powerful marlin as it leaps from the sea. The Cayman Islands coat of arms is located at the top. The year is inscribed along the outer rim at the lower left while the weight, purity, and content of "1 OZ 999 SILVER" is inscribed at the lower right.
