American Medallion Company [AMC]

The American Medallion Corporation (AMC), owned by Robert Westfall, was a prolific producer of thematic rounds in the late 1980s. The company was incorporated in 1986 and was based in Houston, TX. In 1986 and early 1987, it operated under the name Texas International Mint and subsequently changed to the better-known American Medallion Corporation. Rounds produced during the earlier years bear the mint mark "TIM". Rounds minted under the AMC label usually bear the "AMC" mint mark. By 1989, it had ceased operations. Another mint must have acquired the dies and machinery since a Panda round from 1992 is an exact copy of the round minted by AMC in 1997, but does not contain the "AMC" mint mark. Much of the history concerning the short-lived company remains unknown.

The company appears to have secured rights to issue medallions associated with DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and other cartoon entertainment holding companies. Its most well-known series was titled Cartoon Celebrities, which contained a wide variety of medallions depicting both modern superheroes and older cartoon classics such as Dagwood, Blondie, Brutus, and Popeye. The set consisted of 36 medallions and was produced in 1987. The set was minted in Bronze, Silver, and a limited colorized silver thought to be limited to no more than 50 rounds.

In addition to the Cartoon Celebrities series, AMC also produced other series that honored entertainers, patriots, and mythological creatures. One 1987 series paid homage to bullion minted by foreign governments. It contained the Chinese Panda, Australian Koala, and Canadian Maple Leaf, among others. AMC also minted bullion rounds with the obverses and reverses bearing common motifs. The 1 Oz silver medallions were minted with .999 Fine Silver. Most rounds minted by the company
