Produced by the United States Medallion Corporation, this 1991 round celebrates the Marine Corps' success in Operation Desert Shield. The company commissioned a set of 6 medallions, each celebrating a branch of the United States military. Additional medallions with different obverses were also minted. The mint and mintage are unknown, but all rounds produced by the United States Medallion Corporation are uncommon.
Obverse: The central image on the obverse is a logo for Operation Desert Shield. A camel and two palm trees are depicted within a triangular shield. Two crossed swords are shown at the bottom of the shield. The words "OPERATION DESERT SHIELD" surround the image. An inscription along the outer rim states, "FOR THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR IT FREEDOM HAS A FLAVOR THE PROTECTED NEVER KNOW".
Reverse: The central image on the reverse is the seal of the United States Marine Corps with the date "1775" underneath. A lower inscription reads "UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS". The weight of "1 OZ" is located towards the upper left, while the composition of ".999 FINE SILVER" can be found to the right.
