Description

Homestake Mining Company operated from 1876 through 2001 and was one of the largest gold mining companies in the United States. They produced poured bars in the late 1970s. Beginning in 1981, they produced yearly silver rounds that celebrate milestones in the company's life. The mint producing the rounds from 1981 to around 1984 is unknown. Beginning in 1985, all of the rounds have a uniform reverse and were minted by NWTM, which itself began operations in 1984. Some of the later rounds exist with gold relief. The mintage is unknown, but the rounds are scarce.

Obverse: The image on the obverse depicts machinery needed to keep the mine running. A banner at the bottom reads "MAINTENANCE". Two inscriptions are located within the outer circle.  The upper inscription bears the name of the mine "HOMESTAKE GOLD MINE" while the lower one gives its location "LEAD, S. DAK."

Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is the company's logo. It is an oval with the name "HOMESTAKE". A crossed shovel and pick are centered behind the middle letter "S". The dates "1876-1989" are located underneath the logo. The weight of "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed at the top, while the composition of ".999 FINE SILVER" is located at the bottom.
