1998 1 Oz NWTM West New York Centenary Round BU

This round was produced by NWTM to celebrate the 1998 Centennial of the town of West New York in Hudson County, New Jersey. While the mintage is unknown the serial number on the edge is only five digits. The actual number minted is probably far less than 10,000.

Obverse: The obverse depicts the seal of West New York. On the northern half of the inner circle is a visual representation of the City of New York. Above the skyline are 13 five-pointed stars representing the 13 American colonies. The lower half of the circle depicts the Town of West New York's pre-waterfront development with its mixed-use environment which embodies the town. At the bottom is an industrial gear holding up a piece of plywood, symbolizing growth and development. Encircling the image are the phrases "PROGRESS & PROSPERITY" at the top and "1898 100TH ANNIVERSARY 1998" at the bottom.

Reverse: The reverse depicts the seal of the state of New Jersey. The helmet and the horse's head crest represent New Jersey's independence as a state. At the left, the woman holding a staff with a liberty cap on top is Liberty, who represents freedom. The woman on the right is the Roman goddess of grain, Ceres. She holds a cornucopia, filled with the many fruits and vegetables produced in New Jersey. The three plows on the shield symbolize the agricultural tradition of New Jersey.

Edge: The edge is reeded except for a flat surface at the bottom which contains a 5-digit serial number.
