Halley's Comet is a periodic comet that returns to Earth's vicinity about every 75 years. It was named after Edmund Halley who investigated separate reports of comets, concluded they were the same, and predicted its return in 1758. The comet last appeared in 1986 and is projected to return in 2061.
Obverse: The central feature on the obverse is an image of the astronomer Edmund Halley. His name is inscribed at the top and the dates of his life "1656-1742" can be found at the bottom. The weight and fineness of "ONE OZ. FINE 999+ SILVER" are located to the right.
Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is a depiction of the comet. Stars decorate the background. The wording "HALLEY'S COMET FALL OF 1985" surrounds the image. Around the outer edge are the most recent dates of the comet's appearance "1456 AD 1531 AD 1607 AD 1682 AD 1759 AD 1835 AD 1910 AD".
