2000 1 Oz Continental Coin Southern Scrap 100th Anniversary Round BU

Southern Scrap was founded in 1900 in New Orleans, Louisiana, by the Diefenthal family. It began as a localized business assembling, sorting, and distributing scrap and waste materials. In 1957, Southern Scrap acquired a major waterfront site along the New Orleans Industrial Canal. Deep-water access allowed the company to pioneer ship-breaking and heavy marine salvage operations, recycling blue-water vessels and old military crafts. The business was sold to European Metal Recycling in 2006. In 2000, the company commissioned Continental Coin to produce a round to commemorate its 100th Anniversary. The distribution mechanism for the rounds is unknown, but they were likely given out or made available for the employees to acquire. The mintage is unknown, but the rounds are rare.

Obverse: The obverse depicts a frosted diamond with the words "100 ANNIVERSARY" superimposed. The upper inscription reads "100 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE", while the dates "1900-2000" are inscribed at the bottom. Continental Coin's overlapping "CC" mint mark is centered above the dates. 

Reverse: The reverse features the company's circular logo. The inscription to the left reads "SOUTHERN SCRAP", while the one on the right states "DIEFENTHAL INVESTMENTS". A five-pointed star at the top separates the two inscriptions. The weight and composition of "1OZ. 999 FINE" is located at the bottom. Continental Coin's overlapping "CC" mint mark is found to the left of the lower inscription.
