1980 1 Oz Leopard USS Constitution Round BU

Rounds with the Leopard motif were minted over a period of years by an unknown company during the 1970s and 1980s. The animal might be a cheetah, mountain lion, or cougar, but a leopard is the most common description. The first known round with the Leopard reverse was minted in 1974. The obverse bore the phrase "INTERNATIONAL VALUTA". All subsequent rounds came to be known as the International Valuta rounds. The mintage for the rounds is unknown, but all are quite scarce.

Apart from the 1974 and 1976 rounds, the dates are often located in the rocky outcropping to the right of the leopard. The following are the currently known obverses: 1974 - Eagle, 1976 - USA Bicentennial; 1980 - USS Constitution, USA Bicentennial, Eagle flying left, Eagle pouncing to the right, Eagle head facing left, Elephant; 1981 - USS Constitution; 1982 - Eagle; 1983 - Elephant, Brontosaurus, Brachiosaurus, and Ram.

Obverse: The obverse illustrates the USS Constitution sailing across the open waters. Encircling the image is the motto "THOU TOO SAIL ON O SHIP OF STATE - SAIL ON O UNION STRONG AND GREAT". The outer circle bears no inscriptions.

Reverse: The reverse depicts the leopard motif common throughout the series. A leopard sits in the foreground looking intently to the right. A rocky outcropping with the date "1980" is located in the background at the lower right. The weight and composition of ".999 FINE SILVER~ONE TROY OUNCE" arch across the top. The word "OUNCE" is inscribed at the bottom.
