1997 1 Oz Mystic Krewe of Shangri-La Doubloon BU

Rare doubloon available only to organizers within the Krewe.  This particular round has a beautiful blue toning and the serial number "2". The MKS was formed in 1973 and paraded in Chalmette until 2000 when they moved uptown to St. Charles Avenue. At its heyday in 1982, Shangri-La was the largest women’s organization in the history of Carnival in New Orleans. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused a steep decline in its membership and Krewe's last parade was in 2010. The theme for the 1997 parade was "It's Scentsational".

Obverse: The central image on the obverse is three perfume bottles.  The round was designed by Jim Reyes.  Underneath the perfume bottles is a text which reads "IT'S SCENTSATIONAL 1997". 

Reverse: The reverse features the insignia of MKS.  The insignia is shaped like a shield.  A banner runs from the upper left to the lower right and contains the initials "MKS". The upper part of the shield contains a dove while the lower part has a carnival mask.  A crown adorns the top of the shield and the date "1973" can be found at the bottom point.  Immediately below the date is the name "SHANGRI-LA". Intricate scrollwork and olive branches decorate the outer edges of the shield. The phrase "NEW ORLEANS MARDI GRA" is inscribed above the central image.  

Edge: The edge is smooth.  The purity and content of "999FS" is inscribed at the bottom of the round.  The serial number is located at the top.
