Description

Rare doubloon commissioned by the Elks Krewe of Orleanians.  The Krewe of Elks Orleans parade was founded in 1935 by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks' New Orleans chapter. It's the oldest and largest of the Mardi Gras truck float parades.

Obverse: The central image is a courtyard scene from New Orleans. The lamp post in the foreground bears the street name "PIRATES ALLEY". The words "VIEUX CARRE" are inscribed at the top while the date "1968" is engraved at the bottom. To the right of the date is the name "JEAN LAFITE", a notable pirate. The name of his brother, "DOMINQUE YOU", is inscribed to the left. To the center left under a balcony are the initials "H.A.S.". H. Alvin Sharpe is a famous engraver known as the creator of the Mardi Gras Doubloons.

Reverse: The reverse features the insignia of the Elks Krewe of New Orleans.  The central image is the head of a bull elk facing left. The numbers "10 11 12 1 2" are inscribed at the top mirroring a clock. The name of the organization "ELKS KREWE OF ORLEANIANS" is inscribed along the bottom. To the right is the date "1935" which was the date the order was founded.

Edge: The edge is smooth and bears no inscriptions.
