1 Oz Sunshine Mint Great Northwest Mt. Hood Trade Unit Round BU

Although unmarked, this round was minted by the Sunshine Mint in the early 1980s. Another round with the same reverse and themes on the obverse depicts a covered wagon at the gates of Vancouver. The Mt. Hood round is also paired with a sunray reverse that features the Sunshine Mint mint mark. The Vancouver round is also paired with a $ reverse, which itself has been paired with a known Sunshine Minting Morgan obverse. As a result of these different pairings, it is reasonable to conjecture that the mint is the Sunshine Mint. The Mt. Hood round is the more common of the "Great Northwest" rounds.

Obverse: The obverse depicts the snowcapped mountains of Mt. Hood and Mt. Saint Helens. Their names are inscribed at the base. TA line of text at the top of the round reads "THE GREAT NORTHWEST". The composition of ".999 SILVER" is located at the bottom, with the weight of "1 TROY OZ - 31.1 GRAMS" found immediately above.

Reverse: The central feature of the reverse is the common motif of the trade unit scales. Laurel leaves flank either side of the scales. The weight "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed at the top with "31.1 GRAMS" immediately below it. The lower inscription contains the text "SILVER TRADE UNIT". Immediately above that is the purity and content of ".999 FINE SILVER".
