Sterling Foods, originally known as Sterling Milk Company, was a company headquartered in Wauseon, Ohio. It was founded in 1934 and operated a chain of local convenience stores in Ohio. The company specialized in milk and dairy products and was also famous for its 14-foot-tall fiberglass cow mascot named Sterlena. The company sold most of its convenience stores in 2002 and finally ceased operations in 2010. The reason for the round's minting is unknown, but since it specifies the inaugural year of inception, it may have been commissioned to celebrate an anniversary. The mint and mintage are unknown, but the round is seldom seen.
Obverse: The obverse features a center circle bearing the inscription "STERLING SINCE 1934". Several cans, utensils, and machinery associated with dairy products surround the inscription. Stars decorate the outer rim.
Reverse: The central feature of the reverse is the company name "STERLING". The composition and weight of "FINE SILVER .999 ONE TROY OUNCE" is located in a box below the name. An upper inscription reading "STERLING ON FOOD IS LIKE STERLING ON SILVER" arches across the top, while a lower inscription states "THE HALLMARK OF QUALITY". The name "WAUSEON, OHIO" is located below the lower inscription.
