The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which began in 1972, is the largest ballooning event in the world. The yearly event is held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in October. Commemorative medallions were issued for the event from 1981 to 2005. The International Mint produced the medallions from 1981 to 1996. From 1997 to 2005, Albuquerque Coins assumed responsibility for producing the rounds. Medallions in several sizes have been produced in silver, gilded silver, and gold, with the 1 Oz silver medallion being the most common. Multiple coins were produced for many of the events. The mint actually minting the rounds is unknown. Mintages are low for most issues, and the medallions are scarce.
Obverse: The obverse depicts a balloon shaped like a frog. The name "HOPPER T. FROG" is inscribed at the bottom.
Reverse: The reverse features several special-shaped balloons. An octopus-shaped balloon is front and center, while a stagecoach can be seen at the upper right. A balloon shaped like a Jack-O-Lantern is found at the upper left. The phrase "2003 ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA" arches across the top. The inscription "SPECIAL SHAPE RODEO" is found at the bottom.
Edge: The edge is smooth with an inscription at the left that reads ".999 FINE SILVER".
