Kazakhstan Mint was created in 1992 by the National Bank of Kazakhstan to produce coins, currency, presidential medals and awards, and commemorative coins for the country of Kazakhstan. In 1994, the Mint, which had been located at the Ulba Metallurgic Plant, became an independent legal body, and in 1998, it officially became a government entity managed by the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The Kazakhstan Mint is engaged in the manufacture of national currency of the following types: circulating coins from base metal alloys and galvanized steel blanks, bullion coins, and commemorative coins from base and precious metals. The quality of the collectible gold and silver coins, both circulating and proof, is on par with other national mints. Large proof quality coins have been produced with diameters up to 100 mm and weighing up to a kilo.
To date, the Kazakhstan Mint has only produced one government bullion issue, the Silver Irbis (Snow Leopard). The series began in 2009 and has been produced in 1 Oz, 2 Oz, 5 Oz, and 10 Oz sizes. Several sizes of gold coins were also produced. The coins have not been produced for all years during that span. No 1 Oz coins appear to have been minted from 2011 to 2014, and no coins were produced from 2017 to 2019. This series has one of the lowest mintages among all the world bullion series and is minted with .9999 Fine Silver.
