This coin was accidentally struck with a die intended for the gold coin which contains the letters "AU". An attempt was made to salvage the coins by counter-stamping them with a smaller "AG". Roughly 1500 of these coins were struck in error and of those about 1000 were melted. It is estimated that only 500 or so remain in existence today. About 300 have been graded by NGC and none by PCGS. This is one of the rarities in the Somali Elephant series.
Obverse: The obverse depicts the coat of arms for Somalia. The coat of arms consists of a shield with a single star that is being held by two upright leopards, which are standing on large crossed spears below them. “SOMALI REPUBLIC” is inscribed above the shield and the face value of "100 SHILLINGS below it. The year the coin was minted, "2015", is split on either side of the shield with the first two digits to the left and the last two to the right.
Reverse: The reverse features a herd of elephants with a baobab tree in the background. Birds can be seen flying in the distance. The phrase “AFRICAN WILDLIFE” is inscribed at the top while “ELEPHANT” can be found at the lower left. The weight and composition of "1 OZ AG 999" are inscribed at the lower right.
