2003 1 Oz Shawnee Tribe Lewis Clark Drouillard Round BU

The United States recognizes the Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe (Oklahoma) under the Shawnee Tribe Status Act of 2000. It issued its first historical round on 30th July of that same year. The round features Chief Tecumseh, with mintages of 50,000 BU and 20,000 proofs. Rounds were issued every year from 2002 through 2011. Although the rounds are not legal tender, they bear a denomination of one dollar, given to make them more collectible. The 2003 round features Lewis, Clark, and Drouillard.

Obverse: The obverse features Lewis, Clark, and Drouillard facing westward. Drouillard, the son of a French Canadian father and a Shawnee mother, played an integral role in the Corps of Discovery as both interpreter and scout. The upper inscription reads "LEWIS • CLARK • DROUILLARD". The denomination of "ONE DOLLAR" is inscribed at the bottom. 

Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is the coat of arms of the Shawnee Nation. The coat of arms on the reverse contains 12 stars, representing the original 12 tribes of the Shawnee Indian Nation. The four tribes that survived were known to the white settlers as Mequachake, Chillicothe, Liskapoke, and the Piqua. The outer circle bears the upper inscription of "THE SOVEREIGN NATION OF THE SHAWNEE TRIBE" while the lower denomination bears the date of "2003".
