The 2001 coins featured the Year of the Snake. The snake contains a double meaning when looking at it through the Chinese Zodiac scope. Snakes that are discovered in the garden bring delight to that household, but on the lunar calendar, it represents malice, immaturity, and mystery. The reverse of the coin reveals a female snake protecting her nest of five hatching eggs.
Obverse: The obverse depicts the Jody Clark design of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Royal Diadem crown on her head. She is encircled by text around the outer rim which includes her name "ELIZABETH II", the name of the issuing country "AUSTRALIA", and the face value of the coin "1 DOLLAR".
Reverse: The motif is the lunar animal of the particular year. To the left of the motif, the date "2001" is inscribed while a Chinese symbol representing the lunar year is located at the right. The inscription beneath the motif contains the weight, purity, and content of "1 OZ 999 SILVER". Floral scrollwork decorates the spaces between the inscriptions. The background has a smooth, frosted finish.
