An elephant stands amid tall grass in the Serengeti.
Obverse: The obverse features the Zambian Coat of Arms. The African fish eagle represents the conquest of freedom and the nation's hope for the future. The hoe and pickaxe represent the country's economic backbone: agriculture and mining, as well as the characteristics that have influenced Zambia's evolution and nature. The shield is a representation of Victoria Falls with white water cascading over black rock. The Victoria Falls represent the Zambezi River, from which Zambia takes its name. The coat of arms also has emblems of Zambia's natural resources: minerals and mining, agriculture, and wildlife. The shield is supported by two figures, representing the common man and woman of the nation. The country's motto is "One Zambia, One Nation", which emphasizes the need for unity in a country of over 72 ethnic groups. The phrase "BANK OF ZAMBIA" is inscribed above the Coat of Arms, while the date "2000" is separated by it with two digits to the left and two to the right. The denomination of "5000 KWACHA" is inscribed at the bottom.
Reverse: The reverse of the coin features a new elephant design every year. Most designs feature elephant herds exploring the Somali vistas, including grasslands and a sunrise or sunset, but some feature a striking single bull elephant. The phrases “AFRICAN WILDLIFE” and “ELEPHANT” are inscribed on the outer rim, as is the weight and purity of the silver "1 OZ AG 999".
