Halley's Comet is a periodic comet that returns to Earth's vicinity about every 75 years. It was named after Edmund Halley who investigated separate reports of comets, concluded they were the same, and predicted its return in 1758. The comet last appeared in 1986 and is projected to return in 2061. Although the possible print run was capped at 1,000,000, serial numbers sent out with the rounds indicate that far fewer were ever minted. It is possible that the mintage ended up being less than 20,000.
Obverse: The central feature on the obverse is a left-facing bust of the astronomer Edmund Halley. His name is inscribed at the bottom along with the dates of his life "1656-1742". The weight of "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed at the top.
Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is a depiction of the comet. Stars decorate the background. To the left, an eagle perches on a rock observing the comet go by. A mountain range can be seen in the distance. The wording "HALLEY'S COMET 1910*1986" is inscribed at the top. A lower inscription denotes the mint as "THE BURTON MINT OF BEVERLY HILLS".
