1983 1/4 Oz South African Krugerrand BU

Although this round bears similarities to the current South African Krugerrand series, it was not minted by the South African Mint.  There were at least 2 private mints that minted these rounds in 1983. The Type 1 round is smaller and thicker than the Type 2 round. The font between the two also differs, with the font on the Type 2 round being thinner and larger.  Finally, the purity inscription on the Type 1 round takes up 3 lines while it is only 2 lines on the larger Type 2 round. The mint that produced the Type 1 round also produced fractionals in 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, and 1-gram sizes. Type 2 rounds are harder to find.

Obverse: The obverse of the Silver Krugerrand features the left-profile portrait of Paul Kruger. The text "STEFANS JOHANNES KRUGER" circumscribes the profile.

Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is the image of a Springbok antelope. Above the antelope, the composition of ".999 FINE SILVER" can be found. The weight of "1/4 OZ" is located to the right. The commemorative dates of "1967-1983" are inscribed at the bottom. The text "KRUGERRAND COMMEMORATIVE" circumscribes the central image.
