Obverse: The central image on the obverse depicts the first United States postage stamps that honor Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. The inscription at the top reads "125TH ANNIVERSARY" with the dates "1847-1972" located immediately below. The date is located at the bottom and the inscription immediately above contained in a banner reads "FIRST UNITED STATES POSTAGE STAMPS". Sprigs of ivy decorate the lower left and lower right of the round.
Reverse: The reverse features a textual inscription relating to the history of the postage stamp and the first US stamps issued. Above the text are the dates "1847-1972" while beneath the inscription is the logo of the US Postal Service.
Edge: The edge is reeded except for a small smooth space containing a 4-digit serial number and the purity and content of ".999 F.S.".
